Simple Fabric Printing

Workshop Student Materials List:

There is a $7.00 materials fee for the paint, which is provided, collected at the start of class. I will also have a few goodies for you.

Design Sources

Your favorite book or collection of photos for design ideas; and/or Dover books you like. Or come with designs about 2"x3" or 3"x3".

Fabric

8 to 12 fat quarters of light solid colors or white 100% cotton, pre-washed. You may find you want more, so bring some extra fabric just in case; and/or any other lighter print you want to try. Things like tie-dye looking fabrics would be good backgrounds for printing.

Clear or White Plastic

Drop cloth weight and large enough to fit under your fat quarter of fabric.

Cotton Batting

Large enough to fit under your plastic, these two together make a simple printing surface.

Scrap Paper and Tracing Paper

For working out designs and design elements etc.

Sponges

Another means of applying painting, bring different sizes.

Paper Towels

For clean-up purposes you can also use a rag.

Palette and Palette Knife

To mix colors in and with, clean TV dinner trays work well, avoid the dark ones to best see your colors.

Pencil

Bring a soft No. 2 pencil for writing on your fabric.

Stencil Brushes

Both a small and a fat sized one will be good to have.

Xacto Knife and Cutting Mat

A small Olfa mat or a piece of stiff cardboard to cut on.

Vegetables and a Knife

Cabbage, celery, squash, fruits or any others you want to try.

Rubber Stamps

Stamps with simple shapes and deep impressions work best.

Objects

Objects with interesting designs in relief like baby blocks

Found Objects

Look around you for things which may print well. From your sewing studio bring: empty spools, beeswax holder, presser feet from sewing machine, buttons, thimble and/or bobbins etc.

Scissors

Masking Tape

No duct tape please.

Water Jar

Plastic is preferred for safety purposes.
