Soft-Edge Machine Applique'

Workshop Student Materials List:

Photograph or Slide

Your favorite landscape or other piece you wish to appliqué. If you have a painting to work on bring it. Slides and photographs can be enlarged on a color copy machine. This is easier to see for working and can also be used for tracing with a light box.

Sewing Machine

Zigzag capability is optional. Bring all attachments, extra needles and your instruction book for the machine.

Darning Foot

Try to have one for your machine before class. This is for machine embroidery or darning and most machines have them available. If you can't find one I will have spring needles available. The Elna darning foot works for Featherweights and is available from Treadle Art.

Open Toe Presser Foot

This foot is great for straight lines. Also great if you machine quilt. Treadle Art has it as an applique' foot.

Extension Cord

Thread

Bring colors to go with the picture you are planning. I prefer Mettler, or Gutterman (good quality thread), just do not bring wrapped core thread. Lately I have been using machine embroidery thread by DMC.

Glue Stik

Avery Dennison's or UHU or one you know washes out of fabric. Not the type which goes on purple.

Tracing Paper

4 or 5 sheets of 8"x10", or what you have on hand.

Scrap Paper

Scrap paper for backing while gluing.

Pencil

Soft No. 2, so it will mark on fabric.

Scissors

Very sharp fine point such as embroidery scissors.

Basic Sewing Supplies

Scissors, Pins, Thimble.

Fabric

Bring a backing fabric color of your largest area. i.e. - light blue if you have a large area of sky etc. Bring many very small pieces of different colors and prints for the applique'. Bring small flowers to cut out, if you want to try Broderie Perse Updated. Other conversational prints work too, such as rabbits in the bushes.

BORDER (Optional - most will not be ready for this in class. )

Border Fabrics

1. Bring pre-cut 3 1/2" squares in the colors you plan for your piece - half should be solids - remember the sky is very light.

2. A few 1" strips of plaid for the tucked border would be useful.

3.  Many 1" wide strips of fabric 4" or longer in your colors, if you want to do the strip pieced border and a piece of muslin 4" x 12" (or width of your painting).

Flannel

White piece bigger than your planned work - minimum 30"x36". This is to pin on pieces of border. Also, something to back your flannel so you can work vertically - foam core board is great or corrugated cardboard works too.
