Living along the California coast has made sunsets over the sea very special to me. A combination of piecing and painting was used to make this quilt. The sun is painted and the sky, or sunset, is pieced from many different fabrics; many of them are hand marbled. The underwater portion is created with a painted sea and seals and with soft-edge machine applique' kelp. The machine quilting was done with a variety of metallic threads. At Pacific International Quilt Festival in 1994, this quilt won Best Interpretation of Theme.
